Prize money at the Hong Kong Jockey Club will rise by nearly 90% next season, boosting the amount of cash awarded to horses and racegoers in all categories. The increase is aimed at compensating for a drop in horse population and rising costs, while also encouraging more high-class runners to compete and rewarding those who win. The Club has lifted prize money across all 88 races, including Class 1 and Group 2 contests.
The G1 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup (1400m) remains the world’s most endowed seven-furlong Group 1 race on turf at HK$12 million. The upcoming HK$20 million Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m) on FWD Champions Day will be the second most valuable 1200m Group 1 on turf, while the HK$5 million BMW Hong Kong Derby (2000m) on the same day is now the highest-valued two-year-old race in the world.
HK$1.5 million (US$192,333) is a lot of money, but it’s less than half the amount that Hong Kong fencers Cheung Ka-long and Vivian Kong Man-wai pocketed for their gold medals in this year’s Paris Paralympics. The Jockey Club is attempting to close that gap by increasing the reward for podium toppers in the Paralympics and other elite competitions.
Sergio Garcia’s runaway victory at the LIV Golf Hong Kong event this week boosted his pocket money even more. The Spaniard won the individual title with a score of -18, while Fireballs GC finished at -37 as the team winner.
