Each year Overland runs the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize, which is supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation. A panel of judges selects a winning story and two runners-up. The winners receive $5000 and their work will be published in our autumn 2024 edition. The judges, Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh, would like to thank all the authors who entered this year’s competition for their superb submissions.

Jennifer Gonnerman is the winner of this month’s Sidney Prize for her article on Jacqueline Tamaklo, one of millions of Americans who have been victimized by predatory mortgages and foreclosures. Gonnerman writes about Tamaklo’s struggle to keep her home after purchasing it from her pastor, who led her to believe she would be able to re-finance and lower her monthly payment.
