The winners of this year’s Hong Kong Book Prize were announced in the presence of Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Carrie Lam at the Central Library on Monday. The winning entries were chosen from a shortlist of 30 works, selected from a wide range of disciplines including humanities, social sciences and science.

This year’s winners were selected for their “extraordinary creativity and contributions in developing a new generation of readers and promoting the Hong Kong reading culture”. Among the prize-winning books are The Longest Silence by Li Xiaoyuan, a novel that explores life in China’s countryside and The Man Without a Country by Han Kang, a story about the pain of being human and Korea’s turbulent history.

Besides the monetary prize, all prize-winning entries will be published in an album. In addition, a special exhibition featuring the shortlisted works will be held in the Hong Kong Museum of Art from October 15 to November 30 this year.

In his online speech, Lam praised the achievements of the Yidan Prize laureates for their contributions to global education. He also expressed the HKSAR government’s commitment to transforming Hong Kong into an innovative and world-leading city through its outstanding talents in education.

In a separate ceremony, the winner of this year’s BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize was named on Wednesday. The prestigious award was created to champion the mission of “Boosting Hong Kong and Serving the Country through technology” by attracting top scientific talent, nurturing forward-looking scientists and together building the city into an international innovation and technology hub.

BOCHK said it will recognise scientific researchers who excel in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and Energy, Advanced Manufacturing and FinTech. The prize selection process is conducted objectively and impartially, free of any influence from any organization or individual. It also adheres to the highest standards of scientific and professional ethics. The finalists will be invited to a gala event in Hong Kong next month.
