In a star-studded ceremony at Mediacorp Campus, Prince William announced the winners of the 2023 Earthshot Prize at an event attended by leaders from the food, travel, and tech industries in Southeast Asia. The award ceremony also showcased innovative companies that are helping to address the climate crisis in the region, including GRST, WildAid Marine Programme, and S4S Technologies.

In his speech, the Duke of Cambridge highlighted the importance of innovation and collaboration in solving some of our most challenging global problems, citing the recent announcement of the winners of this year’s award. He praised the work of this year’s finalists for their leadership and pioneering work, and noted that these companies represent some of the best examples of what can be achieved when different disciplines, sectors and people come together to make a difference.

The winner of the Singapore Prize, which was created in 2014 in support of SG50, will be announced in Oct. The prize will be awarded to a publication that has made a lasting impact on our understanding of Singapore’s history. The prize was mooted by Kishore Mahbubani, Distinguished Fellow at the NUS Asia Research Institute, in a column for The Straits Times in 2014. The prize is supported by a grant from the Ministry of Culture and Information and is managed by NUS. The prize jury, chaired by Mahbubani, will review 31 books submitted by publishers. The book that receives the highest number of votes from the nominating committee will win the prize.

For the first time, a non-fiction book will be honoured with the Singapore Prize. The organisers hope the book, Home Is Where We Are by Hidayah Salleh, will help readers understand the dynamics of the Singaporean community. The author spent five years interviewing people from Gedung Kuning, the old Istana Kampong Glam, to write the book.

The prize is named after Sir Christopher Bathurst KC, Viscount Bledisloe of Westerham (known as Chris Bathurst) (born 1934; died 2009). A member of Fountain Court Chambers, he was a leading commercial practitioner at the Bar in London who built up a substantial practice in Asia, especially Singapore. He was a well-known advocate and public intellectual, who was known for his clarity of thought and writing style. He was a popular and energetic cross-bench member of the House of Lords. His cases included the leading decision of Caparo v Dickman 2 AC 605 in 1990. He was also a founder of the Association of Singapore Legal Professionals. He was made a life peer as Viscount Bledisloe of Eastham in the 1994 New Year Honours. The IPS is proud to honour his memory.
